Just a 45 min. drive from Faro airport, near the lovely beach town of Lagos, the Palmares Golf Course was re-designed by famous golf architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. and has been transformed into one of the best Links courses in Portugal, regurarly ranking within the country's top 10 golf courses.
Palmares is a 27-hole golf course, offering three distinctive loops of 9-holes: Alvor, Lagos and Praia. All are equally challenging and interesting and can be combined as desired, offering players a different experience with each game.
The Palmares Golf Course offers incredible views across the Bay of Lagos to the Alvor Estuary, with some holes, in true Links fashion, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and providing golfers with a truly peaceful atmosphere.
The Alvor Course plays through pine tree-lined corridors, with the majority of holes ascending hillsides or descending through narrow valleys. The parkland setting disappears momentarily, and the area of mature trees is replaced with a series of more exposed holes. A preview of the dune holes to come is also provided at the sixth and seventh holes. As the round concludes, the course ascends once again into parkland.
The Lagos Course begins with the same parkland character, incorporating the only two lakes found on the entire site in the short par-three third hole and the long par-four sixth. Holes seven and eight immerse golfers in expansive dunes on the south-west portion of the site, before the loop concludes by ascending back to the clubhouse amidst a parkland setting.
The Praia Course has a classic seaside dune setting and is fully exposed to the elements. Four seaside holes are surrounded by the beach and a railway line after descending from the parkland. The second hole whisks golfers into the true coastal links, which continues to the closing hole: a strong, uphill par-five, rising back out of the dunes through a deep valley to an amphitheatre just below the impressive clubhouse.
The Palmares Golf Course offers excellent practice conditions. The Driving Range is 300m long, with tee boxes on both extremities and various greens to simulate playing situations.
The amazing Clubhouse was designed by RCR Architects, winners of the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Award. The state-of-the-art Clubhouse provides a stunning panoramic view over the Alvor Estuary, the Meia Praia beach and Ponta da Piedade.
The Clubhouse is also home to the fine-dining Al Sud Restaurant by chef Louis Anjos, which acquired its Michelin star in just five months following its opening and has retained it every year since.
