Designed by golf architect Joseph Lee and built in 1990 on marshland, the Laguna Golf Course has been constantly improved over the years. Located in Vilamoura, Algarve, and part of the prestigious Dom Pedro Group, the Laguna Golf Course is now one of the region's most unique golf destinations.
The tee shots are relatively safe here as wide fairways and few trees mean that even crooked drives are still playable, with the exception of holes 11 and 12 where you have to play around and over a lake. 79 strategically placed bunkers and numerous water hazards are the main difficulties of the course.
These factors combined with occasional strong winds make for an interesting round.
Lee may have designed a golf course that is visually intimidating, but as the holes are not very long most golfers won't have much difficulty. The main challenges here are the bunkers and water hazards, but players have a good overall score.
The features of the Laguna Golf Course can be likened to the challenges provided by a traditional Links course. There are several ways to play the course, as you will discover at hole number 5, which is 315 metres for a Par 4 with a lake covering the right-handed dogleg. Here, the player's options for the first shot range from a driver to a number five iron.
In addition to acting as hazards and emergency water reservoirs, the lakes at the Laguna Golf Course serve a useful purpose in attracting a variety of aquatic birds, both resident and migratory.
