The Furnas Golf Course is situated in one of the most beautiful parts of São Miguel, one of the Azores islands, and only a 25-min drive from Ponta Delgada. The golf course is close to the beautiful Furnas Lake, one of the largest and most attractive lakes on the island that is famous for its hot springs.
This glorious view also takes in the stunning Furnas Valley, which is famous for its tropical vegetation and mineral water. All the place names here demonstrate the volcanic origins of these islands, which offer the ideal climate for playing golf all year round.
The original 9-hole golf course of Furnas, in the Azores, was completed in 1936 to the design of MacKenzie Ross, best-known for the Estoril Golf Course near Lisbon and for his work in restoring, from near ruin, the world-famous Ailsa and Arran courses at Turnberry in Scotland.
Extended in 1992 under the supervision of British golf course designers Cameron Powell Associates, the full 18-hole golf course of Furnas is now a par 72.
Furnas Golf Course is set amidst majestic Japanese cedars and has challenging contoured greens. The course is naturally flat but is a true test of skill and finesse. Furnas Golf Course has all the playing characteristics of a Scottish golf course.
Each fairway is undulating and requires all types of shots and the small plateau greens are contoured and full of slope.
Most of the greens are slightly elevated and the bunkers are relatively flat with coarse lava sand and pebbles.
