Designed along parkland lines, the Pestana Alto Golf Course was the last golf course to be designed by the legendary Sir Henry Cotton in the Algarve. Sir Henry Cotton's description of Alto Golf: "The undulating terrain makes each hole a new challenge, from mastering the double-dogleg to softly putting the tiered greens. It is a golf course for those who like challenge in their game."
After Sir Cotton passed away, the Alto golf project was continued by Peter Dobereiner, a well known golf journalist.
The Alto Golf Course is located between the picturesque village of Alvor and Praia da Rocha, and 5 kilometres from the city of Portimão, in the Algarve.
With the beautiful Monchique mountains as its backdrop, The Alto Golf Course runs through two valleys and offers winding fairways and gently undulating greens.
The natural landscape of the terrain integrates perfectly with the golf course, with pine, carob, almond, fig and olive trees lining the fairways.
The Alto Golf Course offers an attractive design and can be enjoyed by all handicap levels. On the first nine holes, players have the added pleasure of enjoying an excellent view over Lagos Bay. The back nine of Alto Golf, set on rolling slopes, includes the remarkable "O Gigante", The Giant at 570 metres, one of the longest in Europe.
Any player who manages a birdie here will receive a certificate and his or her name will be inscribed on the Alto club's roll of honour.
